In the West Bank, Palestine, children grow up under occupation. Violence, fear, and poverty shape daily life.

Twice a week, our team of fearless musicians create an alternative in  Bara’em Ghirass. At the Ghirass Cultural Center, children from refugee camps and isolated villages across the Bethlehem district come together to learn instruments, sing and perform in ensembles. There are no auditions, and no competition. The musicians of Bara’em Ghirass create a safe and welcoming place for all children.

Through music-making, children discover their own creative voice, build meaningful relationships and develop confidence in themselves and their community. By embracing Palestinian musical traditions the programme strengthens both cultural identity and social connection.

“With Bara’em Ghirass, you go deep like the roots of a
Palestinian olive tree, deeply rooted in history, in
heritage, in our homeland, in love, and in hope…
Beautiful Sarah, my beloved bird, you have
excelled.”

Mission

Bara’em Ghirass provides inclusive music programs for children across the Bethlehem district. Together with the Ghirass Cultural Center, the program creates opportunities for creative expression while strengthening families and communities. Current priorities include:

  • Music for Children Instrumental lessons, choirs, ensembles and music-and-movement workshops provide accessible opportunities for children of all backgrounds to learn, create and perform together.
  • Supporting Families Regular music activies and sessions with a social worker for mothers and children offer opportunities to reduce stress, build supportive relationships and experience the benefits of music-making alongside their children.
  • Heritage and Inclusion Traditional Palestinian music and instruments are integral to the program, strengthening cultural identity and belonging for all children.

Impact Stories

Sarah

“Eight-year-old Sarah is embarking on her journey with hope and light. Born into a family whose parents are deaf and unable to speak, she communicated through sign language. However, she found her own way to express herself through music, making melodies her beautiful language with the world…

Sarah chose the violin as her means of expressing herself. Experiencing music has changed her personality greatly; it has made her more confident, calm, and interactive with those around her. She has demonstrated a remarkable ability to focus and communicate through playing music.

Sarah’s experience with music confirms that every child has a unique way of learning and expressing themselves, and that language is not limited to words. Melody can be a bridge between hearts and minds.”
