Decades after civil war, communities in El Salvador continue to face violence, injustice and displacement. ¡Soy Música! provided an alternative, creating real-life, everyday examples of peaceful coexistence. The program embedded nonviolent leadership and inclusive music practices within schools and communities across the country.

Developed together with the Salvadoran Ministry of Education and UNICEF, the programme empowered teachers and community leaders to create safe and creative learning environments where children and young people can thrive.

Musicians Transform communities

By equipping educators with practical music leadership skills, ¡Soy Música! reached far beyond individual classrooms. Teachers used music to encourage cooperation, empathy and creative expression, helping children build stronger relationships while creating positive change throughout their schools and communities.

Mission

¡Soy Música!’s mission was to build long-term capacity within El Salvador’s education system by training teachers and community leaders to use music as a tool for inclusion, wellbeing and peaceful coexistence. Through national partnerships, the programme expanded its reach nationally across schools and communities. Areas of action included:

• Music Leadership for Educators Teachers and community leaders received practical training to facilitate inclusive music activities that strengthen creativity, cooperation and social-emotional learning.
• Music in Schools and Communities The methodology was embedded in classrooms and community spaces, helping children and young people develop confidence, resilience and positive relationships through music.
• Scaling National Impact A full training curriculum was co-created between Musicians Without Borders and the ¡Soy Música! team, adopted by the Ministry of Education. In cooperation also with Unicef, we grew a national network of trainers, expanding access through teacher training, community initiatives and educational media.
